Activity #1
Vocabulary Development - Frayer Models
- RL6.4 Determine the meaning of words as they are used in context
- SL6.4 Present findings using pertinent descriptions, using appropriate eye contact, adequate volume, and clear pronunciation
Expectation:
You will stand up in front of the class and TEACH your vocabulary word to the rest of the students. You will be evaluated in the Standard RL6.4 & SL6.4 on a scale from 1-4.
1 - Does not meet grade level standards
2 - Progressing toward meeting grade level standards
3 - Meets grade level standards
4 - Excels at grade level standards
You must include:
1 - Does not meet grade level standards
2 - Progressing toward meeting grade level standards
3 - Meets grade level standards
4 - Excels at grade level standards
You must include:
- the vocabulary word
- the sentence from the text
- the definition (including the part of speech)
- synonyms & examples
- antonyms & opposites
- an explanation of your illustration
- Finish by getting 2 students in the audience to use the vocabulary word correctly in an original sentence.

Collaborative Discussion ch 19 - 20:
Small Group

Directions:
- Use your Cornell Notes to discuss ch. 19 & 20, and the inferences you made while reading. Be sure to discuss the evidence you used to make your inference.
- Then discuss in detail the assigned Questions.
- Take turns asking your group the questions you wrote.
- What do you expect from your group members during the discussion?
Key Questions:
- What inferences did you make in chapter 19 & 20?
- What evidence did you use to support your thinking?
Ch 19: Never Into the Black Down Under
- P. 123 What does Max think about the place his father takes him to on Christmas morning? How do you know?
- P. 126 What do Loretta's words and actions tell you?
- P. 127 What part of the plot structure begins at the end of chapter 19 and will continue into chapter 20?
- What would you want the author Rodman Philbrick do next with the plot?
- P. 129 How do Max's words affect his dad? bHow do Max's words give him power?
- P. 130 What are some of the details Max remembers about his mother's murder? Infer how carrying all this knowledge around inside of him and not saying anything would affect him.
- P. 132 How do Freak and Max empower each other? How does this add to the thematic topics of friendship, trust, and acceptance?
- P. 133 How do you feel about Loretta? Why?
- On page 134 who is the hero? Is ONE of them the hero, or are both Max and Kevin Heroes? What's your evidence?
- Write a 1 paragraph response answering the question.
- Introduction (A sentence about heroes/your thought or opinion)
- Claim (Your Inference - The Bold statement answering the question directly)
- Evidence (details and quotes from the text to support your thinking - Should be several sentences)
- Reflect (Your own thoughts about Max/Kevin/heroes)
Homework - Due Monday 10/24
- RL6.1 Making Inferences and supporting your analysis with evidence
- RL6.3 Describe how the plot unfolds in a series of events
Read Chapter 21 & 22. Complete Cornell notes. Include:
- 6 - 8 annotations
- 3 - 4 questions using DOK Stems (Depth of Knowledge)
- Include a level 1, 2, & 3 Question
- and a summary
