Day #2 - 9/9/15 - Unit 1: Developing Rules & Creating Readers Response Notebooks

Dear 6th graders,
          I hope you all enjoyed your first day back to school. Please hold onto all the important forms. I will be collecting them in an orderly fashion. Remember to order your lunchsharpen your pencils, and then pick a place to sit. Please sit only 5 people at a table. 
          Next, I want you to work on creating your name tag. You can find the materials on the music stand. Please write your name large, and as neat as you can. Draw a symbol or picture to go with your name. Remember to use a quiet voice while you work, and DO YOUR BEST.

Reading Notes: 

The Literary Elements
  • Authors use a variety of strategies and devices to help them develop and craft their stories.
  • These strategies are known as the Elements of Literature, or Literary Elements.
  • Some Literary elements include:
    • Theme
    • Conflict
    • Characterization
    • Symbolism
    • Allusion
    • Setting
    • Plot
    • Style
    • Tone
    • Figurative Language
    • Personification
  • Theme = The subjects and ideas for a work of literature. The story's message or main point.

2. Video - Amazing Starlings
  • What is a starling?
  • Why is it important for birds to learn how to fly?
  • What would happen if a bird didn't know how to fly?



3. Read: Calvin Can't Fly

  • What do the words 'tolerance' & 'intolerance' mean?
  • What does the word cooperate mean?

Directions: 
1. Discuss the three questions below with your table group.
2. In the Reading Response section of your notebook please write your own individual response based on your discussion.
  • How do we see the themes of Tolerance, Friendship, trust, and diversity in the story.
  • Why is it important to demonstrate tolerance, friendship, trust, and acceptance on a daily basis.
  • How can you show these character traits in the classroom.

Develop anchor charts for 
classroom rules
1. What does responsibility look like at home, at school, with your homework, with your teachers, with your self?

2. What does respect look like at home, at school, with your homework, with your teachers, with your self?

Directions:

  • Work with your group members to discuss the assigned rule or character trait.
  • Then create a poster or display of what your group discussed.
  • Be sure to include a list of details for your rule or character trait.
  • Your poster should have large print and detailed pictures.
  • Choose a spokesperson to share the information.

Where is Matt?

Key Questions:
  • So what did you see in this video?
  • Was there some person that was in all the dances?
  • How did the video make you feel while you were watching it?
  • So the guy in the Videos name is Matt and he's done a few of these videos. why do you think he does that?
  • Where is one of the places that you saw him dance that surprises you?
  • How do you think he is able to actually travel to all these places?
  • So what i know is that he had a job when he made the first video but then he quit his job after he saved all his money so he could spend the money traveling around the world dancing with all the cultures.what you think of that?
  • Do you think this is something you may want to do when you get older?
  • Do you think people in other countries other than America are different than you?
  • Many people say they get emotional some people even cry when you watch these videos that Matt makes what do you think about people that react that way?
  • Do you think that there is a message that Matt is trying to make by dancing with all the different people and cultures around the world?
  • And if Matt we're watching what would you want to say what would you want to ask him about the videos?
  • And would you want to dance with Matt and his next video?
  • How do you see the themes of friendship, tolerance, diversity, and acceptance. in this video?
  • So why is this video important to what we're gonna be trying to do this year in school?
