Activity #1
Freak the Mighty
(The Final Discussion)

Topic: Imagination & Coping Mechanisms

  • The Bionics Unit: Kevin tells Max that he is getting a brand-new, robotic body. Why do you think Kevin created this lie? Was it a good coping mechanism, or was it cruel to lead Max on? If you were Max would you have wanted to know the truth?

Topic: Growth and Transformation
  • The Empty Journal & the Power of writing: Why does Kevin leave Max an empty book? At the end of the book, Max says he didn't think he could write a book because he didn't have a brain. Why does filling that blank journal help him heal from his grief and overcome his internal conflict of feeling stupid?
Topic: Fate and Identity
  • Escaping the "Chip off the Old Block" Curse: For most of the book, Max is terrified that he is doomed to become just like his father, Kenny "Killer Kane". How does his friendship with Kevin—and Loretta Lee's final advice that "Nothing's a drag, kid"—help Max overcome this conflict and rewrite his own identity?
  • Loretta and Iggy: Loretta and Iggy Lee seem like villains at first, but they end up trying to help Max. What does this tell us about judging people based on their appearance or where they live? Loretta starts the book as a rough, intimidating figure in the Testaments, yet her single comment triggers Max to finally pick up the pen and write their story. How do characters like Loretta and Grim help Max after Kevin's death?

Topic: Friendship and Loss
  • Grim’s Advice: At the end, Grim tells Max that he should feel lucky to have known Kevin, and that "it was time to get on with living the rest of his life". Why is this easier said than done for Max, and what do you think "getting on with living" actually looks like for him now?
