Day 20: 10/1/24 - Evaluate Writing & Freak the Mighty Chapter 11

Homeroom:

Good Morning, 

I hope you are all having a a wonderful day. Please use this time to get ready for your day.

Do Now:

  1. Check that your homework is done
  2. Check to see if you have all your materials
  3. Sharpen pencils

          Today we will evaluate our writing and then read chapter 11.

Do Now:

  • Take out your mini compare & contrast essay
  • Write tonight's homework in your agenda
Independent  work:
  • Finish Reading Chapter 11
  • Complete the reading guide 

Activity #1
Evaluate Writing 

Directions: Work with a random partner assigned by the teacher (Use Name Sticks) to score your essay

Remember: your essay should focus on the similarities and differences pertaining to these literary elements:
  • Characterization - Are the characters developed in the movie the same as the book?
  • Setting - How do the settings compare? Include the way you envisioned the setting in the book to what you see in the movie.
  • Plot - How do the events in the movie compare to the events in the book? Focus on the larger more important events and not the small insignificant details.
****THE WORDS CHARACTER, SETTING, AND/OR PLOT SHOULD BE IN YOUR ESSAY SOMEWHERE, MOST IMPORTANTLY IN YOUR CLAIM! IF YOU HAVE NOT USED THESE WORDS SOMEWHERE IN YOUR ESSAY, ASK YOURSELF WHERE YOU COULD ADD OR EDIT A SENTENCE TO INCLUDE THEM. 

Remember each paragraph should have an Introduction, Claim, Evidence, & a reflection:
Each paragraph is worth 5 points total. 
  1. 1 point - Introduction
  2. 1 point - Claim
  3. 1 point - Evidence (from both the book and movie)
  4. 1 point - Reflection
  5. 1 point - Mechanics = Capitals, punctuation, sentence structure

  • With your partner read your essay and score yourself on each of the components. 
  • ***In each category you can give yourself a full point, a half point, or zero points*** 
  • Add up your total points. 
  • Write your score somewhere on your paper.

  3. What do you still need to work on to improve your writing?

Examples:

          There are many similarities between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first similarity worth noting is the way the characters are portrayed and developed throughout the story. In the book and in the movie Max feels like he does not have a brain until Freak comes along, and he worries that people will think he is a butthead. Kevin is super smart and he talks like a dictionary in the film and in the novel. He is also still battling a physical disability and has to use crutches. Another similarity between the book and the movie is the plot event where the boys go to the fireworks and millpond. In both the story and the movie Max and Kevin have a run-in with Tony D. In order to escape Kevin acts as the brain telling Max what to do, and Max acts as the body carrying Kevin. I think the movie does a good job of recreating the novel for movie goers. If you like the book, you will probably enjoy the film.

          There are many differences between the book, “Freak the Mighty” and the movie, “The Mighty”. The first major difference between the book and the movie is the way Max and Kevin’s friendship begins. In the book their friendship begins when Max helps Kevin get a toy ornithopter out of a tree.  It is this small act of kindness that starts their friendship in the novel, but in the movie their friendship starts when Kevin becomes Max’s tutor. Kevin then gives Max money to take him to the fireworks. Another difference between the book and the movie is the setting. When reading the book I picture a small run down town, and in the movie the setting is a large heavy populated city. In my opinion the book does a better job telling the story of Max and Kevin becoming Freak the Mighty. I recommend reading the book before watching the movie.
