Activity #1
Sharing Frayer (Vocabulary) Models

Goal:
For this activity it is your job to teach your vocabulary word to a small group of your peers well enough so you can get several students to use it correctly in a sentence of their own. You will be split up into 2 groups.

Group 1 - Slytherin & Hufflepuff
Group 2 - Gryffindor & Ravenclaw

**Teachers - Feel free to split your houses up into the 2 groups however works best in your classroom

How to Present:
You will stand up and play the role of the teacher. 

Be sure to include:
1 - the word (including the page number)
2 - the sentence from the text
3 - the definition including the part of speech
4 - any synonyms or examples
5 - any antonyms or opposites
6 - an explanation of your illustration
7 - finish by asking if anyone has questions about your word, and if someone in your group can use your word in a sentence
8 - Once you have shared you can hang your Frayer model on your locker. Put them right below the combination dial.


Here is an example of a script you could use when you share.

1. Hello, the word I am going to teach you is __________ . This word can be found on page ______ . 
2. Here is the sentence from the text: "__________________ ."  
3. (Your word) is a (What part of speech?) The definition is _____________________________ . 
4. Some synonyms of (your word) are __________________ .
5. Some antonyms of (your word) are __________________ .
6. My illustration is __________________________ .
7. Does anyone have a question about my word, or Frayer model?
Does anyone think they can use __________ in a sentence?

Tips:
  • Make sure you hold your model up so the other students can see it
  • Speak loud and clear. 
  • Speak slowly. Do not talk too quickly or quietly.
  • Pause between each section
  • Ask if anyone has questions when you are done
  • Don't forget to ask if anyone can use your word in a sentence of their own

Key Questions for after students share:
  • What is one new word that you learned today?
  • What does that word mean?
  • Do you think you could use that new word in your every day life?

Activity #2
Best Question:
Directions:
1. Each house will receive 1 piece of loose leaf paper, and will have 10 -15 minutes to discuss, and write, as many level 2 and 3 questions as they can. Your questions can pertain to any part of the book we have read so far. 

2. As you work, be sure to discuss what questions you think are your best. These will be the questions you will ask the rest of the class. The only way for you to know which ones will be best is by discussing them within your group.

3. After the 10 - 15 minutes is up, you will take turns asking your question aloud to the rest of the class. It will be your job to lead the discussion, not the teachers. You will call on people to answer. 
*When you are answering the question, be sure that you do not just answer the question. Make sure you answer the question in light of what you have already heard. This way you can address any of the previous answers and build off of something you already heard, or you can argue/present your own viewpoint. The best questions will generate the best discussions regardless of whether or not they are level 2 or level 3.

4. After each Hogwarts House has asked 1 question the teacher will award points for the question they think is best.

1st = 50 points
2nd = 30
3rd = 20
4th = 10

**You may play as many rounds as you have time for.

Remember that there are 4 levels of questions. In class we focused on learning how to write levels 1 - 3. 

Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge. Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion. After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.
