Activity #1
Frayer (Vocabulary) Models
Frayer models are a fun simple way to learn new vocabulary.
Today will be broken up as follows:
10 - 15 minutes to go over directions
60 - 70 Minutes to complete your model
Directions:
- Find a fun, interesting, new, or challenging word from chapter 5 - 13
- Sign up for your word on the chart paper. Include your name, word, & page # (Virtual students - tell your homeroom teacher the word you want to sign up for)
- Once a word is taken it may not be used again by any other student in that classroom
- You will only have today in class to work on your model, so work diligently. We will be presenting them during the last 15 - 20 minutes of class.
Frayer Models have 6 sections
- The word goes in the middle (Big and Bold)
- Sentence from the text goes in the top left. Include the page number.
- Copy the whole sentence. Properly!
- The definition of the word goes in the top right. Include the part of speech (Noun, Verb, Adjective, or Adverb)
- Use wordcentral.com
- Synonyms & examples go in the lower left. Synonyms are words that mean the same thing
- Use your own knowledge, along with wordcentral.com
- Antonyms & Opposites go in the lower right
- Use your own knowledge, along with wordcentral.com
- An Illustration of your word goes at the very bottom
- Write big and bold. Fill the space
- Make sure everything is spelled correctly
- Write using bold, dark colors.
- Color and decorate using light colors, or light shading
- Be aware of the time and work diligently
- Do not just copy the definition from the dictionary. Try to fully understand the definition and put it in your own words if you can
- Be sure you include the part of speech (Noun, verb, adjective, or adverb)
- You might want to complete the model in pencil first, then go over your work in pen, markers, or colored pencil.
Your teachers will give you a template for your model, and I will show you some examples of good models.
Activity #2
Share Frayer Models
Directions:
For this activity it is your job to teach your vocabulary word to the rest of the students in your class. Depending on how much we have, your teachers will break you up in a way that will allow all of you to share in a small group.
Present your Frayer model to your peers. Be sure to include:
1 - the word including the part of speech
2 - the sentence from the text where you found it
3 - the definition (Explained by you in your own words)
4 - any synonyms or examples
5 - any antonyms or opposites
6 - an explanation of your illustration
7 - finish by asking if someone in your group can use your word in a sentence
8 - Once you have shared you can hang your Frayer model on your locker. Put them right below the "All About Me" activity.
Tips:
- Speak loud and clear.
- Speak slowly. Do not talk too quickly or quietly.
- Pause between each section
- Ask if anyone has questions when you are done
- Make sure you hold your model up so the other students can see it
- Don't forget to ask if anyone can use it in a sentence of their own
Key Questions:
- What is one new word that you learned today?
- What is the definition of that word?
- What does that word mean?
- Do you think you could use that new word in your every day life?
