Activity #1
Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets Chapter 8 - The Deathday Party

Directions:

  • Today you will have the opportunity to choose the type of notes you want to complete for this chapter.
  • Go to page 42 in your notebook and choose which type of notes you will try
  • Once you've picked, go to the next page in your notebook and begin setting up your notes with the date, title, & page number.
  • *Remember* Notes go on the left side of your notebook.
  • Raise your hand if you need sticky notes.

What is one note taking strategies you tried in a previous chapter?
What did you like about it?
What did you not like about it?
What note taking strategy did you pick for this chapter?
Why?

Discussion Questions:
  • Why does Harry get into trouble with Filch?
  • What kinds of things do you get into trouble for at home?
  • Who invites Harry to their Deathday party?
  • Do you think he made the right decision? Would you go to the party? Why, or why not?
  • Harry hears the voice again and he tries to follow it. What would you do if you were Harry?
  • What does Harry find when he follows the voice?
  • How would you react to the writing on the wall, and Mrs. Norris being petrified?
  • What do you think the teachers/Dumbledore should do?
  • Should Hogwarts be closed? Explain.
  • What should Harry do about the voices? What would you do?
Best Question:
As we read I want you to write down questions in your notes. When we are done reading you will have the opportunity to ask your questions to the group.

Remember that there are 4 levels of questions. In class we focused on learning how to write levels 1 - 3.

Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge. Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion. After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.
