Day #105 - 3/3/16 - Unit 3: Ch 13 Bud, Not Buddy, If - Rudyard Kipling - Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts & Poetry

          I hope you all had a nice evening. Today is an E day so we will go to Music.  We will also read chapter 13 of Bud, Not Buddy, and write a summary. We will also read an inspirational poem by Rudyard Kipling.

Bud, Not Buddy Chapter 13 
  • Today we will 
    • record unknown words and use context clues to determine the meaning of unknown words,
    • annotate the chapter with gist statements and questions
  • so we can achieve deeper levels of comprehension, build vocabulary, and demonstrate the ability to summarize a section of a text.

    In your Reading Response Notebook write a brief summary of chapter 13.

    IF - By Rudyard Kipling



    Key Questions:
    What is this poem mostly about?
    What makes a poem different from a story? Why?
    Why is it important to read poetry closely?


    Notices and Wonders of Stanza 1
    We read poetry closely to analyze word choice, and to understand the meaning the author is trying to convey.



    Key Questions:

    • What do you notice about the structure(the way it’s organized) of stanza 1?
    • What do you wonder about the structure?
    • How is the structure of a stanza different from a paragraph?
    • What do you notice about the punctuation?
    • What do you wonder about the punctuation?
    • How does the punctuation help guide your reading?
    • What do you notice about the word choice?
    • What do you wonder about the word choice?
    • Are there any words or phrases that stand out to you? Why?




    Social Studies

    Directions:
    Step 1: Read the events that you will be using on your timeline, cut them out & match the pictures that go with the events.
    Step 2: Place them in chronological order and Number the events, along with their pictures.

    Step 3: Get 4 sheets of paper (same color) ***See Teacher example****
    Step 4: Glue them or staple them together end to end, overlapping them about 1 inch. Be sure that your 4 sheets measure at least 1 meter, (100cm)
    Step 5: Use a ruler to draw a straight line across your paper.
    Step 6: Create a Scale. You need to have the years 5000BC - 0 on your timeline. I used 10cm = 500years. (see my example)
    Step 7: Mark the scale and write it on your timeline in pencil.

    Step 8: Go over your pencil lines on your number line with marker.
    Step 9: Cut out your events and pictures
    Step 110: Match your pictures with the proper event.

    Step 11: Glue your events to your timeline being sure to draw your picture and event are aligned, connected somehow. 
    Step 12: Title your Timeline
