• select a piece of card stock
• Glue your shield to the card stock

Topic: Figurative Language

• Figurative Language is when words go beyond their literal meaning

• Simile
• uses the words 'like' or 'as' to compare one thing with another. 
• Ex: She was as busy as a bee. He played like a beast during the basketball game.
• Metaphor
• makes a direct comparison between one thing and another. 
• Ex: He was a beast during the basketball game.
• Personification
• when human characteristics are given to an animal or nonliving object.
• Ex: my teddy bear gave me a hug. The lightening danced across the sky. The wind howled.
• Hyperbole
• An exaggeration that is so dramatic that no one would believe the statement is true. Often used to make a point. 
• Ex: He's got a million video games. 
• Redbull - It gives you wings!
• Alliteration
• The repetition of the initial sound in closely connected words
• Ex: Go and gather the green garbage in the gutter
• She sells sea shells down by the sea shore
• Onomatopoeia
• Sound Words
• Ex: The car went boom!
• Ex: Splash, buzz, zip, zoom, etc.
• Idiom
• an expression that cannot be understood by the words alone
• Ex: It's raining cats and dogs
• Ex: Hold your horses
• Ex: I have a frog in my throat
• Allusion:
• A reference made to something that is not directly mentioned
• Kevin calls his mom the "Fair Gwen" - a reference to the Fair Guinevere from the Legend of King Arthur

• Use markers & write in Large print

Directions: 

• Pick up a copy of  "Who are You"from the table
• Complete page 1 & 2 by filling in the blanks. 
• Use that information to decorate the 'Shield' 
• Follow the guidelines on the 'Shield' worksheet  
• You should take your time and do your best. 
• These Shields will hang above your locker for the entire year.

Where's Matt?
• What do the words 'tolerance' & 'intolerance' mean? What about Friendship, trust, and diversity.
• Why is it important to demonstrate tolerance, friendship, trust, and acceptance on a daily basis.
• How can you show these character traits in the classroom.






Key Questions:

• So what did you see in this video?
• How did the video make you feel while you were watching it?
• So the guy in the Videos name is Matt and he's done a few of these videos. Why do you think he does that?
• Where is one of the places that you saw him dance?
• So what I know is that he had a job when he made the first video but then he quit his job after he saved all his money so he could spend the money traveling around the world dancing with all the cultures. What you think of that?
• Do you think people in other countries other than America are different than you? How about the people in this classroom? Do you think we're different?
• Many people say they get emotional. Some people even cry when they watch these videos that Matt makes. Why do you think people react that way?
• Do you think that there is a message that Matt is trying to make by dancing with all the different people and cultures around the world?
• How do you see the themes of Respect, responsibility, integrity, friendship, tolerance, diversity, and acceptance in this video?

• How did the character ultimately show responsibility?
• Did the characters show integrity?
• How did the characters show integrity in the end?
• How do we see the themes of Tolerance, Friendship, trust, and diversity in the story?
• What do these themes have to do with respect, responsibility, and integrity?

Day 1: 9/6/17 - A Day - First Day of School

Good Morning ALL New 6th Graders,
          Welcome back to school and welcome to 6^th Grade. I hope you all had a wonderful summer vacation. Each day as you enter the room I want you to read the morning message and complete the "Do Now" tasks assigned. I am looking forward to getting to know each and every one of you. It is going to be a very exciting year.
         The first thing I want you to do is to select a seat. Leave all of your supplies in your backpacks. We will take care of them later. Next, pick up a piece of card stock from the brown table and work on creating a name tent for yourself. See mine for an example.  Please include 3 pictures that represent you. 

          Take your time on your name tent, but if you finish early please sit quietly while you wait. Homeroom is a time to prepare yourself for the day ahead, and is not to be used as a time to goof around.  I have lots of information to give you today, so hold all your questions and I promise I will address each and every one of them.

Summer Update

          I hope you have all had a wonderful summer vacation. Mine has been restful and rejuvenating. I spent time with my family, and we worked on renovating our home. I was also able to travel to Yankee stadium in New York City with my sister and my father, who just happens to be a die hard Yankee fan. 

          My wife and I took a trip to our favorite little Caribbean island, also known as Aruba. We swam in the ocean every day and even got to go on a tour of the island while driving in a UTV. Here are a few pictures of my summer. 

          The new school year is quickly approaching. Before you know it will be September. I am looking forward to meeting each and everyone of you. It is going to be a wonderful school year.
