Today we will review some themes in Freak the Mighty, and then we will do some more theme practice with an assignment in our google classroom.

Activity #1
Identifying Themes in Freak the Mighty
Directions:
Step 1: Glue the Blank theme tree in your notebook on the next page. Include the date and page number. Think about the story of Freak the Mighty and list some theme topics on the trunk of the theme tree (Use your notebook)
Step 2: Pick the topic that you think is the strongest, best, or most interesting.
Step 3: Find, and record in your graphic organizer, four pieces of text evidence from Freak the Mighty. (Like we did with Christian the Lion) Think - what happened in the story that made me think about this theme/topic.
Step 4: Analyze your text evidence and think about the message, or lesson, you learn. Ask yourself, "What can I learn about ____________ ?"
Step 5: Write your "Theme Statement" on the lines provided.

More Theme Practice
Directions:
Students can work independently, with a partner, or in groups of 3. (TEACHER"S CHOICE)
- Go to google classroom and open the Theme practice assignment.
- Read each passage carefully
- Think about the topics within each.
- Think about what the lesson is. Do not tell me about the characters. Think about what you learned.
- Determine what you think the theme is and record your response on the line provided.
- Remember theme is a complete sentence, and it does not include character's names
- Theme is NOT one word.
- This will count as a homework/classwork grade.
