Day 97: 3/23/21 - Harry Potter Chapter 6 Writing

Good Morning,

I am very disappointed with the number of assignments that were handed in yesterday that were clearly done in a rush to simply get them turned in. I am talking about your quizzes, notes & summaries.

You all know exactly what is expected of you when it comes to your notes, quizzes, and summaries. Each student who hands in assignments like the ones I graded last night will not only receive a score of zero, but they will also be told they need to redo and resubmit them. Additionally, they will cost their house points. I will not grade inferior work that lacks effort.

This is work that we have been working on for more than two weeks, so if you think you are going to rush through your assignments and get two weeks worth of work done in one class, you are sorely mistaken. If you are missing numerous assignments, it is going to require real effort on your part to get caught up.

I also do not understand why there were several students who were here in school on Monday who did the chapter 6 notes in class with me or their homeroom teacher, and then did not submit a photo of their work.  Your teachers are giving you 90 minutes of Language Arts in school so you do not need to have any E.L.A. homework. There is no excuse for you to not have this work done.

Consider this your warning. Your actions have consequences. I will still give you full credit for your back due work, but I will not lower my standards or expectations. Today we will be writing about chapter 6 of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets. Make sure you put forth your best effort.
                                       Thank You,
                                          Mr. Trumble

  • Can you describe what happens in Lockhart's class? level 1

Directions:
Instead of completing a quiz today we will play "Best Question"

Directions & review of the different levels of questions
10 Minutes

Writing Questions
10 minutes - Meet with the people in your house to write the best level 2 & 3 questions. You may write questions about anything we have read so far.

Discussion time
20 minutes

Question Levels:

Level 1 - Has 1 answer that can be found directly in the text *Does not prompt a discussion because there is only 1 correct answer & it's right in the book

Level 2 - Has an infinite number of answers and puts you, the reader, into the book. *Usually prompts the best discussions if everyone does their reading, because this type of question asks for your opinion about things that are happening in the book, and everyone has an opinion.

Level 3 - Has an infinite number of answers and pulls situations from the book and asks you to apply them to your own life. *Can often prompt great discussions if you ask the right question because these types of questions get people talking about their own lives.

Each House will get a piece of lined paper. You will have 10 minutes to write as many questions as you want. Focus on writing good level 2 & 3 questions. You may write about anything that has happened so far in the book. Take some time to discuss your questions and pick 2 - 3 questions you want to share with the whole class.

Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion. After all 4 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best. The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions. Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.  If you finish one round of questions, you can play an additional round.

Activity #2
 The 45 Second Summary Challenge

Directions:
In this challenge you will work with the members of your house to discuss the events of the chapter and write a summary. If you do not have enough people to make a full group, your teacher might combine 2 houses for this activity. You will have 15 minutes to write.  Each house will then choose a representative to read their summary out loud. The readers have 45 seconds to read their summary out loud. The teachers will act as the judges and award points for the best summaries. Your summary will be written on the page right next to your notes.

***Notes go on the left, summaries go on the right.***

Your summaries should include:
  • the main idea (think mood/big idea)
  • the most important details from the chapter
  • reflection (Your own thoughts about the events of the chapter)

As you are working your teachers will come around to provide you with support. Be prepared to let them help you, especially in these first few chapters. As you get better you won't need as much help. Your teachers might ask you questions like:

  • What does your summary need to start with?
  • Have you written the main idea?
  • What did you write for your main idea?
  • What details are you including?
  • Why are those details important?
  • Have you used any transitional words to connect your thoughts and sentences?
  • Are there any places where you should use transitional words or phrases.
  • What are your thoughts on the events of the chapter? (reflection)
  • What do you think about what you read?
  • How do these events show that Harry is a literary hero?
  • Capitals, Periods, Grammar, & Sentence Structure

YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO FOLOW THE RULES OF WRITING.
  • Indent the first sentence
  • All other lines are lined up on the margin line
  • Words go on the line
  • Put spaces between your words
  • Proper capitalization & Punctuation
  • Spelling matters (You should not be spelling words from the book incorrectly, especially character's names)
  • Neatness
