Activity #1
The Plan for Reading
&
Note Taking Strategies

Plan
In Unit #1 we learned all about the literary elements.

In unit 3 we are going to use our knowledge of the literary elements to help us analyze the story of Harry Potter, and compare it to the pattern of story telling called "The Hero's Journey"

The genre of our first novel (Freak the Mighty) was Realistic Fiction.

The Genre of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets is Fantasy.

We are reading the second book in a 7 book series. Tomorrow we will watch a short video about the first movie, so all students know what they need to know from the first story before beginning this book.

Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets has 18 chapters. We will read 2 chapters per week, so it will take us about 9 weeks to read this entire novel.

One Chapter on Mon. & Tues.
  • AA students in person
  • BB & virtual Students are on line
One Chapter on Thur. & Fri.
  • AA & Virtual Students are on line
  • BB Students ar in person
There is going to be a shift in the way that the teachers are giving their instruction in the 3rd quarter. There is also going to be a major focus placed on developing our writing skills.

THEREFORE IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU JOIN THE LIVE STREAM LESSON WHEN POSSIBLE DURING THIS UNIT.

I will have a video lesson available like always, but this unit requires a much higher level of participation. The teachers are going to be spending a lot of time supporting you in person, and online through the writing tasks. If you do not join us virtually, and you are solely relying on the videos, we cannot give you support and feedback in the same way we can when you are participating live.

We will be alternating Reading & Writing.
Mon. - Read Chapter 1
Tues. - Write about chapter 1
Wed. - Support
Thur. - Read Chapter 2
Fri. - Write about chapter 2

This pattern then repeats week after week. All groups will be completing the same assignments every day of the week regardless of where they are learning from. This is another important reason for you to join the livestream. The students who are doing the work in person or online will have all their work done at the end of class, and they will have teacher support to help them. There will not be much additional work outside of class. If you miss the virtual class, or are just watching the videos only, you will have a lot of independent work that can be challenging, and you won't have any teacher support.

Our goal is to help you become better, more confident writers. The best way for us to do that is in person, be it face to face in the classroom or face to face via a screen.

For each chapter you will be required to do several things to help you with your analysis.
  1. You will complete a set of notes (Reading Day)
  2. You will write a summary  (Writing Day)
  3. You will take a written response quiz  (Writing Day)
For many of the chapters you will have the opportunity to choose what style of notes you would like to do. Today I will teach you about a variety of note taking strategies that you can choose from.
