The Rules for Lit. Circle Discussions:
While we read each chapter you will be expected to complete your job for that chapter. Each member of the group will have a different job, and the jobs will rotate each chapter so you will never have the same job twice in a row.
If we do not finish reading a chapter in class it will be your responsibility to finish the reading, and complete your job for homework.
At the start of each class the following day you will engage in a literature circle discussion about the reading.
Your homework will be graded using the 4 point scale.
The Discussion Director is in charge of the discussion. They lead the conversation.
You will take turns sharing, and engaging the rest of your group in a discussion about your topic/job.
Discussion Questions:
*Who are the characters?
*What is the setting? (Time and place)
*What is the basic situation our protagonist is in at the beginning of the book? (Exposition)
*If Harry is a hero he should be experiencing Act 1 Stage 1 (The *Ordinary World) of the Hero's Journey, during these first few chapters. Can you describe how Harry feels out of place living with the Dursley's?

Be sure to use the 4 C's of 21st Century Learning
Each member is expected to contribute to the discussion
Activity #3
The 45 Second Summary Challenge
Directions:
Welcome to the 45 Second Summary Challenge. In this challenge you will work with the members of your house to write a summary of the chapter. You will have 15 minutes to write. Each person will write their own summary in their notebooks. Your summaries can be exactly the same, or you can write them in your own words.
Each house will choose a representative to read their summary out loud. The representatives from each house will take turns reading their summaries out loud. They will have just 45 seconds to read their summary. I will act as the impartial judges and award points for the best summaries.
The summary will be written on the page right next to your Lit Circle job. (We will set this page up together)
Your summaries should include:
the main idea (think mood/big idea)
the most important details from the chapter
reflection (Your own thoughts about the events of the chapter)
As you are working I will come around to provide you with support. I might ask you questions like:
What does your summary need to start with?
Have you written the main idea?
What did you write for your main idea?
What details are you including?
Why are those details important?
Have you used any transitional words to connect your thoughts and sentences?
Are there any places where you should use transitional words or phrases.
What are your thoughts on the events of the chapter? (reflection)
What do you think about what you read?
How do these events show that Harry is a literary hero?
Capitals, Periods, Grammar, & Sentence Structure
YOU WILL BE EXPECTED TO FOLOW THE RULES OF WRITING.
Indent the first sentence
All other lines are lined up on the margin line
Words go on the line
Put spaces between your words
Proper capitalization
Punctuation
Spelling matters (You should not be spelling words from the book incorrectly, especially character's names)
Neatness
How will I earn points for my Hogwarts House?
Points are at the discretion of the judge but here is an approximation of how the points might work out.
1st Place = 30 pts
2nd Place = 20 pts
3rd Place = 10 pts
4th Place = 5 pts
As we get farther into the unit, the point values will go up.
How will I be individually evaluated?
Your summaries will regularly be written in your notebook as practice, and they will count as a classwork grade. However, two times throughout the unit your summaries will be handed in digitally (in google classroom) as a quiz grade so I can formally assess your writing.
Activity #4
Best Question
When we play "Best Question" your classroom teacher acts as the judge.
Each house picks 1 representative to read the question they think is best, and then the student leads the discussion.
After all 3 houses have led the discussion for their question the teacher will award house points for the question they think is best.
The points are entirely up to the teacher, and they may choose to award more or less points based on the strength of your questions.
Some days all Houses will earn points, while other days only one house might earn points. It all depends on you and the quality of your efforts.

Activity #1
Debate Circles
Start by introducing your speech. Begin by saying: Today I want to speak to you about _______________________ . The title of my speech is ____________________ . Then give your speech to the small group. At the end the people in your group should respond with questions, and/or comments. This is a debate. A debate is an argument. Remember you are arguing for what you want, think, or believe. Audience, it is your job to argue against the speaker, or support the speaker. It is not your job to say things like, "Good Speech." You should be talking, debating, and yes, arguing, about the 2 sides of the issue. This is a persuasive argument. It does not include shouting, or getting angry. It involves people making a claim, presenting their reasons, and defending their opinion.

Activity #1
Writing a Persuasive Essay
1. Review the Information Writing Checklist
How will my writing be evaluated?
2. Watch the video for a brief overview of a Persuasive Essay
3. Preview & Glue in the Persuasive Essay Outline/Checklist
4. Brainstorming Topics: Quick-List * A good persuasive essay topic should be an issue that you care strongly about. The best persuasive essays are often about an issue that is controversial, meaning that people often disagree about the topic. Let's create a quick list of possible topics for your persuasive Essay. (5Minutes) Ex:
Healthy School Lunches
Vending machines in schools
Dress codes
Shorter school days
Longer school year
Gun laws
Mall curfews for children underage
Covid Vaccine Mandates
Mask Mandates
Remote Learning
Minimum Wage
College
Social Media
Playing video games
Sports teams
5. PERSUASIVE ESSAY GRAPHIC ORGANIZER
Choose a topic to focus on for your persuasive Essay
Write a YES/NO question for your research.
Each issue/topic has at least 2 sides, or arguments. Write down the two sides to your issue, or topic.
Before we can write a thesis statement or develop our research question we need to gather information about our topic.
Thesis statement = Your Opinion. This is your "I think, I believe, I feel," statement. THIS IS THE MOST IMPORTANT SENTENCE OF YOUR ESSAY! WE WILL COME BACK TO THIS SENTENCE LATER.
6. Key Words & Search Questions
You need to write at least 5 key words & 5 Key Questions that you can use with the databases
7. Research
You will need to find at least 2 - 3 resources that you can use to support your thinking. This is where you will use the library databases to find articles to support your opinion.
Follow these steps
Step 1: Use the databases provided through the school library
Step 2: Use your keywords graphic organizer and search for articles that will help you support your opinion.
Step 3: Once you begin researching select an article based on the title, and on the name of the resource.
Step 4: Preview the information by scanning through the information, looking at the text features, and getting the gist of the article.
Step 5: If you like the article send the article to your google drive. Be sure to also send the citation
Step 6: Read the article closely and complete your "Gathering information" graphic organizer. When you complete this graphic organizer you are looking for information, data, and evidence that will help you prove that your opinion about your topic is the correct opinion. However, you need to make sure you understand both sides of the argument so read information about both view points.
8. Write a thesis Statement
Now that we have gathered information for our topic we can write a thesis statement.
Thesis statement = Your Opinion. This is your "I think, I believe, I feel," statement. ***Be sure to include a brief explanation of 'why'. This is where you will input your 3 reasons you will expand on in your essay. Ex: I believe that all elementary students should receive at least 30 minutes of recess every day, because they will be able to be more attentive, more productive, perform better, and be more well-behaved in class.
9. Outlining
Use the Writing a Persuasive Essay Checklist along with the Outline to begin planning your essay. REMEMBER, THE OUTLINE IS JUST THAT, AN OUTLINE. IT IS NOT THE PAPER ITSELF. YOU WILL BE USING YOR OUTLINE TO THEN WRITE WELL STRUCTURED PARAGRAPHS.
To Complete the Outline:
Start with the Thesis
Then put in your 3 reasons (From your thesis)
Go from beginning to end
You may skip parts and come back to them later
Be sure to include your sources
Use your Checklist if you are unsure about what to do
You do not need to write in complete sentences
10. Drafting
USE YOR OUTLINE TO WRITE WELL STRUCTURED PARAGRAPHS. LET THE CHECKLIST BE YOUR GUIDE. YOU CAN SEE THAT YOU WILL NEED 6 PARAGRAPHS!
I WILL MODEL HOW TO GET STARTED!
You May Write on line paper, but I would highly encourage you to complete your draft in a Google Document. That way we can save it along the way, so then editing & revising will be easier.
