Day 138: 4/28/17 - B Day: Drafting Research Essay Paragraphs (The Introduction & The Problem)

Good day 6th Graders,      
        Today you will begin drafting your research paper.  You will use your outline as a guide to help you write the first two paragraphs, (the introduction & the problem.) Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook
  • RESEARCH MATERIALS

1. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
2. Pick up, or take out your outlines, articles & graphic organizers from your research folder
Homework:
  1. Finish Reading Ch. 7 of HP & the COS. Complete your Lit Circle Job (Due Tuesday 5/2/17)
  2. Complete drafting the first two paragraphs of your research essay (Due Monday 5/1)
  3. Collect Materials for your research project
    • Trifold Poster Board
    • Shoe Boxes
    • Decorative Duck Tape
    • Craft Sticks
    • Etc.

Research - Drafting Day: 
The Introduction & The Problem

Standards:
RI6.7 - Integrate information presented in different media or formats to develop a coherent understanding of a topic or issue.
RI6.8 - Trace & Evaluate the argument and specific claims in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by evidence from claims that are not.
W6.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content

Your Task - (You Do)

  • Use the outline to help you draft the first two paragraphs of your research essay.
  • Use lined paper to draft, and be sure to include a proper heading at the top of your paper. (**Pass out lined paper)
  • You may skip lines if you want, but you don't have to
  • Don't forget to include linking words and phrases. (**Pass out linking words & phrases worksheet)
  • Be sure to include your sources



*In case you were wondering what you should be doing...


*If you happen to finish writing the first two paragraphs of your essay you may do any of the following:
1. Start drafting paragraphs 3 & 4
2. Work on reading ch 7 and completing your lit circle job.

At the end of class I want you to take your outline and your draft home with you to finish the first two paragraphs.

*Then, put all other research graphic organizers and articles that you are not taking home into your research folder in the bin.

The Discussion Director is in charge. They facilitate the conversation.
Sharing goes in this order:
1. The summarizer
2. The Character Captain
3. The Passage Picker
4. The Connector
5. The Vocabulary Enricher
6. The Illustrator
7. The Discussion Director
* Be sure to use the 4 C's of 21st Century Learning
* Each member is expected to contribute to the discussion
* When you share, REMEMBER TO USE QUESTIONS TO ENGAGE THE REST OF YOUR GROUP MEMBERS! When you share it is your job to get the rest of the group involved. The best way to do this is to ask questions, like: what do you think, how did this make you feel, etc. Use open ended questions.

***At the end of your discussion the summarizers will do the 30 Second Recap Challenge.
***There may be a prize for the winner!!!

Complete the "Tracing Arguments" graphic organizer to record important information for your research essay and project. 
*Read each article & use one graphic organizer per article. Be sure to record all the important information from your article onto the graphic organizer, including:

-Title of the article
-Name of the resource
-Author's Argument

-Author's Claim

-Quality of the resource



Task 2 - You Do 
Complete the outline in preparation of drafting.
At the end of class I want you to put all of your research graphic organizers and articles that you are not taking home into your research folder in the bin.
