Day 124: 3/31/17 - C day: Intro to Lit Circles, Ch 1 of HP, & Researching Environmental Issues

Good day 6th Graders,      
        Today we will finish our introduction to environmental issues, and learn about primary & secondary sources. We will also get our copies of Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets & learn about Literature Circles. Please make sure you have:
  • Red Folder & Agenda
  • ELA Notebook

2. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
3. Pick up a Primary/Secondary Sources graphic organizer & shade in the two boxes. See the example
4. Pick up a copy of Harry Potter

Activity #1
Primary vs. Secondary Sources


Standards
RI6.8 Trace and evaluate the argument and specific claim in a text, distinguishing claims that are supported by evidence from claims that are not.
W6.8 Gather relevant information from multiple print and digital sources, & assess the credibility of each source.


  • For your research essay you will be needing 4 - 6 sources. You should get both Primary & Secondary Sources. 
  • 1 to 2 sources should be from a primary source. 2 - 4 sources can be secondary sources.

Essential Question: 
So...
What is a primary source & what is a secondary source?


Primary Source - Actual records that provide firsthand accounts of events

Examples: Letters, Diary Entrees, Journals, Photographs, Interviews, Autobiographies, & Artifacts


Secondary Sources - Secondhand accounts of primary sources. They comment on, summarize, explain, report, or draw conclusions from primary sources, or other secondary sources

Examples: textbooks, encyclopedias, articles, essays, biographies, & summaries



Activity #2
Lit Circles
As we read Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets you will be participating in Literature Circles. Each one of you will have a different job to perform for each chapter. You will be expected to come to class with your job completed so you can take part in a lit circle discussion for the assigned chapter. Each chapter you will get a different job.

Jobs include:
1. Discussion Director
2. Summarizer
3. Vocabulary Enricher
4. Passage Picker
5. Connector
6. Character Captain
7. Illustrator
