Day 151: 5/20/19 - C Day: Final Publication of Research Essays

Good day 6th Graders,      
       Today we will finish editing & revising our research essays so we can publish them, and begin our Learning Fair Projects.

Do Now: 
1. Fill out your Agenda with tonight's Homework
Homework:
  • Bring in the rest of your materials for your learning fair project
  • Make sure your lit circle job is done for chapter 16

W6.2 - Write informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content


Your Task: Type the first draft of your essay as a Microsoft word document.

1. Open a Microsoft word document
2. Begin by changing your font size to 14
3. Type in your proper heading

****Take a moment to 'Save As" *******
Title your document - Research Essay

4. Use the tab key to indent for the first paragraph.
5. Type your essay beginning with your introduction and ending with your conclusion.
6. Be sure to use the 'Tab' key to indent each paragraph.
7. Only use the 'enter key when you get to the end of a paragraph.
8. Be sure to use proper capitals, and punctuation
9. Save your document periodically and make sure you have saved it into your own folder
10. When you are done typing print 2 copy of your essay, and hand one in to me. We will be using your copy to edit and revise.

***All Editing & Revising should be done on your printed copy. Then you will go back on to the computer and make the changes.

Step 1: Choose partner #1
Step 2: Use the checklists to evaluate your writing and make improvements (work with your partner to do this) ***Make sure you have used facts/evidence, and cited your source, at least 8 times. (2 sources per paragraph)
Step 3: Use the editing checklist to fix spelling, punctuation, grammar errors, Etc. (Work with your partner to do this)
Step 4: Choose a new partner and repeat this process

Rules for Lit Circle Discussions:
The Discussion Director is in charge. They facilitate the conversation.
Sharing goes in this order:
1. The summarizer - Begin by sharing your summary. Take time to discuss what what included in the summary, and if anything needed to be added or removed. Be sure to focus on all the important information
2. The Character Captain - Don't just read from your graphic organizer. Share about the characters. Ask your group member what their thoughts are on the characters.
3. The Vocab Enricher - do not just tell your group member what the word means. Take them to that page in the text. Ask them what they think it means. Discuss. Then reveal what the word means
4. The Conflict Evaluator - Don't just read from your graphic organizer. Share about the conflicts. Ask your group member what their thoughts are, and if they were able to identify any other conflicts.
5. The Mood & Tone Analyzer - Don't just read from your graphic organizer. Engage your group in a discussion, maybe with a question. Ask your group member what their thoughts are.
6. The Illustrator (If your Group has 7 People) Don't just show your illustration. Explain it to your group, and tell them about the scene(s) that you thought were important to illustrate.
7. The Discussion Director - You are last because you can only engage everyone in a discussion about the questions once everyone is on the same page. Pick your best questions and allow everyone to share, and discuss.

* Each member is expected to contribute to the discussion

  • When you share, REMEMBER TO USE QUESTIONS TO ENGAGE THE REST OF YOUR GROUP MEMBERS!
