Day 96: 2/9/17 - E Day: Barrack Obama's 2009 Back to School Speech

Good day 6th Graders,      
       As we continue unit 2 about Critical Analysis & Evaluation of Informational Texts we will be reading closely a speech given by former president Barrack Obama. Please make sure you have:

Barrack Obama's 2009 Back to School Speech

Part 1 - Listening & Reading (20 Minutes)

Directions for small group:  (You Do - 10 Minutes: groups of 3)
  • With your groups read the excerpt from the speech you just listened to.
  • Annotate in the margins. You can write questions you have & Inferences you make.
  • Underline important information, and record any connections that you make.
 


Part 2 - Group Discussion (We do - 10 minutes)

Essential Questions:
  • What inferences did you make?
  • What connections did you make?
  • What questions do you have?
  • Why do you think he includes the example in paragraph 1 about not being a varsity athlete the first time you play a sport, or that you don't hit every note the first time you sing a song?
  • In paragraph 4, President Obama repeats the phrase "Students who sat where you sit..." Why does he include this phrase? How does it add to the excerpt from the text?
  • What do you notice about the structure of paragraph 5? How does it add to the meaning of this excerpt?


Part 3 - Independent Assessment

RI.6.1 Cite textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly
as well as inferences drawn from the text.

Directions for Independent Work: 
(You Do - 10 Minutes)
  • Think about the information from our group discussion and use your annotations to anser the 3 text dependent questions.
  • Be sure to answer in complete sentences.
  • Be sure to include evidence from the text!!!
  • VERY IMPORTANT - BE SURE TO INCLUDE EVIDENCE FROM THE TEXT!!!!



If you finish your classwork early you may read from your independent reading book
    Homework:
    • Finish text dependent questions #1 - 3 that go with Obama's 2009 Back to School Speech

    Step 2 - Read through your article to get a basic understanding of what the article is about.
    Step 3 - Reread the article a 2nd time and use the Highlighting and annotating Strategy.

    Step 4 - Complete the Main Idea Graphic Organizer
    ***When you are done you will bring your work to me and we will conference about your article. I will be asking:
    1. What is the topic of your article?
    2. What is the topic sentence?
    3. What is the Main Idea?
    4. What supporting details led you to think that?

    • Each question is worth 2 points. A perfect score is 8/8.

    Last night you reread the 2nd story of Steve Jobs Commencement Address.

    Today we are going to look closely at the 2nd and 3rd story. Throughout his speech Steve Jobs uses some very challenging vocabulary. Before we listen to him share his last two stories you will once again work to determine the meaning of the unknown vocabulary.

    Essential Question:
    What is the meaning of the unknown vocabulary words in the 2nd and 3rd story Steve Jobs shares with the audience?

    Your Task: Determine the meaning of unknown vocabulary

    Directions for small group: (You Do - 10 Minutes)
    • With your table groups identify the bold faced words.
    • Record them on the left side of your vocabulary T-Chart
    • Read the words in their context.
    • Use the context clues, and other tools provided to you in the reading, to write down a definition in your own words on the right side of your T-Chart.

    ***Enrichment Group may begin thinking about their own speech. You will be writing a persuasive speech about a topic of your own choosing. Think of a topic you would be interested in researching and developing a persuasive speech about. Your topic should be important to yourself and to your peers. It can be controversial, meaning that people have strong feelings regarding the topic or issue. You can begin making an outline, or a web, for your ideas. Additionally, you will need to gather some facts and information to support your opinion, therefore you may research using the computers.

    Last night you read Steve Jobs Commencement Address that he gave at Stanford University on June 12, 2005. In his Speech Steve Jobs shares 3 stories with the audience.

    Today we are going to look closely at just his first story. Throughout his speech Steve Jobs uses some very challenging vocabulary. Before we listen to him share his first story let's look at some of this vocabulary.

    Essential Question:
    What is the meaning of the unknown vocabulary words in the first story Steve Jobs shares with the audience?
