Day #30 - 10/21/15 - Unit 1: Learning Stations - Characterization, Setting & Point of View

Good Morning Sixth Graders,
          I hope you have all been having a fabulous morning!!! Today is a Learning Stations Day. We will continue our guided reading books, and practice making inferences. 
         Please make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. Don't forget to check your mailbox each day! You all have mail to pick up.

Point to Ponder:  Word Work Wednesday - Choose your favorite vocabulary word from your guided reading book, one that you have already created a frayer model for. Create a Frayer Model Poster to hang in the "Word Hall." Check with your group members so that you do not do the same word. You will finish the posters at the word work stations, and then as a group you will present them to the class.

    • Finish reading the assigned pages for your guided reading group.
    • Continue to add words from your Guided Reading book to your list of vocabulary words

    • Word Work Wednesday - Create Posters out of your Frayer Models
    • Each person in the group should do a different word from your guided reading book. Work together to figure out who will do what word.
    • Each week we will be sharing the posters we create with our classmates.
    • They will then be added to the "Word Hall"
    #4 Work on Writing (You do)

    Block 1 - Complete your Graphic Organizers on Characterization Setting
    Finish Frayer Model Posters for the Word Hall

    Block 2 - (Written Reposnse - On Loose Leaf)

    Make an Inference: At the end of chapter 20 who is the hero? Are both Max and Kevin heroes? What's your evidence?
    • Fill out the "Making Inferences" Graphic organizer. 
    • Write a 1 paragraph response answering the question.
    Include:
    • Introduction (A sentence about heroes)
    • Claim (Your Inference - The Bold statement answering the question directly)
    • Evidence (details and quotes from the text to support your thinking - Can be one or more sentences)
    • Reflect (Your own thoughts about Max/Kevin/heroes)
    #5 Computer (You do)

    2. Click on the link to watch the Brainpop video
    3. Complete the graphic Organizer about the Main Idea.

    • Log on to the our classroom webpage and go to the ELA blog
    • Create a new post. 
    • Type in the your response about the hero in Freak the Mighty.
    When you are done with your post, read other student's posts and leave them a comment or question.

    Day # 29 - 10 20/15 - Unit 1 - Writing (Dialogue) & Read Aloud Ch 19 & 20 Summarizing and Questioning

              Today is a D day. Please sharpen your pencils, order your lunch, and check your mailbox. 
            We will be reading the next 2 chapters in Freak the Mighty. We will continue to write questions and practice summarizing.

Please make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. Don't forget to check your mailbox each day! You all have mail to pick up.

    Point to Ponder:  Mad Lib Monday. Grab a madlib to work on with a partner from your table group.

      Day #27 - 10/16/15 - Unit 1: Writing (Adding Emotion) Reading Strategies: Questioning & Summarizing

      Good Morning Sixth Graders,
                Today we will begin our day with a Character Ed assembly. Please make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. Don't forget to check your mailbox each day. 
              We will be reading chapters 17 & 18 of Freak the Mighty. We will continue writing questions, both thick and thin.  In addition we will practice summarizing sections of text.

      Point to Ponder:  Take out your Geography Review Packet and quiz the other students at your table. You can ask them questions right from the review sheet, or use the information to make up your own questions. Happy Studying!!

      Day #26 - 10/15/15 - Unit 1: Literary Analysis Essays on Theme or Conflict

      Good Morning Sixth Graders,
                I hope you all are having a wonderful morning. Please make sure you have all your materials for ELA and Social Studies. Sharpen your pencils and order your lunch. 
               Don't forget to check your mailbox each day. Remember your mailbox number is the same as it is for Mr. Frost. 
              Today we will also be the first class to go to the new computer lab. We will finish drafting our mini essays on theme and conflict. You will also be posting them on our ELA Blog so that other students can read and comment about them.

      Point to Ponder:  Continue to work on the Geography Unit Word Search. See how many of the words you can find.

      Writing: Mini Essays

      Pick a Prompt: 
      1. Think about the themes of friendship, acceptance & trust. How does the author develop these themes throughout the story? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.
      2. Think about the types of conflict in Freak the Mighty: Man vs. self, and man vs. man? How does the author develop each of these conflicts throughout the story? Use evidence from the text to support your answer.

      • Log on to the computer
      • Open up your Freak the Mighty Mini Essay
      • Make sure you have included a proper heading
      • Finish drafting your essay
      • Use the checklist as your guide
      • Make sure you have indented each paragraph.
      • Edit: Make sure you have used proper capitals and punctuation. Check for run-on sentences.
      *******When you finish*******
      • Get your writing checked by a teacher.
      • Print 2 copies (1 to be handed in, and 1 for you)
      • Highlight your entire essay and use Control-C to 'copy' it.
      • Go to Kidblog and create a new post.
      • Title it "Freak the Mighty Mini Essay"
      • Use Control-V to 'paste' your essay into your post. 
      • Publish your essay so that other students can read and respond with questions and comments.
